Editor's review
Reel Project is a DVD authoring tool that allows you to create slideshow from your JPG images with MP3 background sounds, and combine them with AVI and MPEG videos.
Pros: With the digital camera becoming so popular, a large collection of photos gets piled up fairly easily. It would be nice to be able to share these with family & friends. Photos and all those clips of videos that one collects so easily these days can be combined into a nice TV show by this DVD authoring application.
Photos get converted to a slideshow. A set of effects can be applied by the application for transitions between images. Videos can be stored as a browsable list of clips.
The Reel Project authoring tool lets you combine AVI and MPEG video clips along with the slide show created out of JPG images. Ability to combine MP3 background music or a narration of your own adds a new dimension to the show. Photos and clips can simply be dragged and dropped onto the interaction area and the application takes off from there. The animated menus created by the application add a professional look to the production DVD. No need to try and combine various software pieces that integrate these elements to create a similar quality DVD from the same material. The Reel Project takes care of the actions automatically, the user simply clicks on the generate button.
Cons: Very little scope of adding your own creativity. The application does things automatically. It would be nice to have editing features that allows users to add/delete/change effects for slideshows and in between video clips.
Overall a quick and easy way of producing DVDs conforming to PAL and NTSC standards for viewing on TV sets, both standard aspect ratio and widescreen. Some amount of creative latitude would have been really nice. In fact, without such creative tools, an application can hardly be said to be an authoring application. Overall rating thus is 3 stars.
